Six Dead Near Nablus, and Israel's Own Probe Undercuts the Hiking Story

Six dead in a single afternoon. Four Palestinians from one family, and two Israelis — a settler and a soldier — killed near a hill village outside Nablus on 24 July 2026, in what was immediately described as the deadliest single incident in the West Bank in months ²³.

The scale is what separates this clash from the grinding routine of raids, arrests and shootings that rarely make more than a paragraph. What is known is the death toll and its composition. The four Palestinian dead belonged to the same family ⁷. The two Israeli dead were a settler and an Israel Defense Forces soldier, later named as Major Yuval Ezra, who was buried on 26 July 2026 ³¹⁰. That mix — related civilians on one side, a settler and an officer sent to respond on the other — explains why both societies treated Tell as a test case rather than a statistic ⁷¹⁰.

Palestinian officials say armed settlers entered the village with military support and tried to break into houses, and that residents acted in self-defense ⁴⁶. The IDF said civilians were hiking when attacked ²¹⁰. The distance between those two sentences is the whole dispute: an incursion met by villagers defending homes, or a walk turned into an ambush ⁴⁶²¹⁰.

The army's response was immediate and broad. Then came the investigation that changed the official story. An Israeli military investigation released on 5 August found the settlers were in the area "without the required co-ordination and approval from the security authorities" ⁷⁵. The probe found the "hike" was unauthorized ⁵. In other words, the army's own findings moved the incident away from the first version of hikers surprised on a trail. The civilians had entered a zone they were not cleared to enter, without coordination, and the military apparatus that then rushed to extract them did so chaotically, at lethal cost to both sides ⁷⁵¹⁰. What remains is accountability of two kinds.
