Tripura's Top Cop Found Dead at His Own Headquarters; Two Investigations, No Answers

It is not every day that a serving Director General of Police is found dead inside the building his force is sworn to protect. On the morning of July 20, 2026, Anurag Dhankar, the 1994-batch IPS officer who headed Tripura's police, was discovered in the washroom adjoining his office at police headquarters on Akhaura Road in Agartala ²¹¹. He was taken to Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, where doctors declared him dead ²⁶¹¹. The discovery came at roughly 11:40 a.m. on a Monday, and the political reaction began before the body was cold.

Important correction to our original broadcast: our video reported Dhankar had been found with a gunshot wound. Multiple Indian outlets that covered the discovery described the scene as a hanging in his washroom, not a shooting. ThePrint, citing PTI, reported that he was found hanging and quoted Chief Minister Manik Saha saying so at the time ⁴. ThePrint's separate account said he had "allegedly hung himself in the bathroom of his office" ⁶. The Times of India, The Hindu, and Northeast Herald all described a hanging in a bathroom or washroom ³²¹¹. None of the reporting provided to us describes a gunshot. We are flagging the discrepancy openly rather than picking a winner; the official determination rests on the post-mortem, not on a newsroom's first draft.

Dhankar had served Tripura for roughly eighteen years ⁴, and his career before that included two assignments that put him on national front pages. He led the Central Bureau of Investigation team probing the ₹13,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud built around fugitive jeweler Nirav Modi ³⁶⁸. He also headed the Special Investigation Team looking into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots ³⁶⁸. The combination made him simultaneously one of the most credentialed officers in the state and one of the most exposed.

Within hours of the discovery, opposition parties CPI(M) and Congress demanded an impartial investigation ⁴, and the opposition as a whole pressed for a judicial inquiry ¹¹. Their objection was structural as much as substantive: the same police force the DGP ran would now investigate how he died. Chief Minister Manik Saha struck a more measured tone in the days that followed, and on August 28 he told the Tripura Assembly that the post-mortem report indicated the death was "suicidal in nature" ⁵.

The state moved on two tracks. First, a panel of senior police officers was set up to investigate, a step framed publicly as a response to scrutiny and transparency demands ⁹. Days later, a three-member Special Investigation Team was constituted to probe what NDV described as the "mysterious" death of the top cop, with instructions to file weekly progress reports to the Inspector General (Law and Order), Tripura, for onward submission to the DGP's office ⁷. That last detail is its own quiet irony: the case file would climb the same chain of command the deceased officer had headed.

Police on the ground said circumstances pointed to suicide but declined to formally confirm the cause of death, and reporting on whether a suicide note was recovered remained unresolved ⁸. The exact cause was to be confirmed by the post-mortem ¹⁰, and the only authoritative reading so far is the Chief Minister's August 28 statement that the post-mortem indicated the death was "suicidal in nature" ⁵.

Even officials who reject the demand for a court-supervised probe have not disputed the premise behind it. A state police force investigating the death of its own Director General is, on its face, a conflict of interest, regardless of whether officers are acting in good faith. The three-member SIT is drawn from inside the same force ⁷, and the senior-officer panel that preceded it was as well ⁹. For the opposition, that was the whole point: they wanted the inquiry pulled out of the chain of command and placed under a sitting judge.

The ruling party has held to a different line. CM Saha's August 28 reading of the post-mortem effectively endorsed the suicide framing without preempting the ongoing SIT ⁵, a stance that asks the public to accept a conclusion and a process in the same breath.

For now, the record on Dhankar's death is two things at once: an official reading that the death was self-inflicted ⁵, and an investigative apparatus that has not said so on its own. A state police force can investigate its own. The question an outsider is left with is whether the public will ever see the version of events that sits between those two statements.
