Marvel Names a New Black Panther and Hands Ghost Rider to Gosling
In Hall H, Marvel named David Jonsson as T'Challa's grown son and gave Ryan Gosling the keys to Ghost Rider, dating both films to 2028.

Nearly six years after Chadwick Boseman's death, Marvel Studios finally said the name of his successor out loud in front of thousands of people, and the room went quiet enough to hear it land 10. That gap is the number that matters here, because everything announced in Hall H on Saturday, July 25, 2026, was an attempt to close it — to move grief into continuity without pretending the loss never happened 2310. Marvel did not recast T'Challa so much as grow him forward, and it paired that delicate move with the opposite kind of bet: a movie-star antihero on a flaming motorcycle 2567.
At the Marvel Studios panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, the studio announced David Jonsson as the new Black Panther and Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider 23567. Jonsson will play a grown version of T'Challa's son in Black Panther 3, a story choice that lets Marvel acknowledge Boseman's T'Challa as father rather than replace him outright 256. Gosling will lead a new Ghost Rider film directed by Shawn Levy, slated for 2028 235678. The two reveals headlined a showcase led by Kevin Feige that was built to reset the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe 3.
Kevin Feige and director Ryan Coogler announced Jonsson's casting during the panel, with Letitia Wright and Winston Duke also appearing onstage 256. The staging mattered: Coogler, Wright and Duke are the surviving core of Wakanda on screen, and putting them around a newcomer framed the handoff as family business rather than corporate recalculation 256. Coogler unveiled Jonsson onstage in what Today.com called a particularly moving moment, a description that fits both the crowd response and the weight Marvel has carried since Boseman died 10. For clarity, the actor's name is David Jonsson, not David Johnson as rendered in automated captioning of HeyDay's own video narration 25.
Gosling appeared in person to announce he was joining the MCU as Ghost Rider 42. Rolling Stone quotes him calling it A Character I've Wanted to Play for a Long Time, which is the only verbatim cast quote supplied in the reporting file and therefore the only one worth setting apart 4. The research memo contains no verbatim quotes from Feige, Coogler or Jonsson, only paraphrases of their announcements, so the rest of what was said onstage should be read as described rather than heard 256. Levy's attachment as director gives the project an immediate commercial shape, pairing Gosling's dry, slightly haunted star persona with a filmmaker who has become Marvel's in-house specialist in turning irony into box office 23567.
A Character I've Wanted to Play for a Long Time
The calendar is now unusually concrete for Marvel, which has spent recent years shifting dates as often as announcing them. Black Panther 3 is set for release December 15, 2028 8. Ghost Rider is slated for 2028 with no specific date given 38. Closer in, Avengers: Doomsday releases December 18, 2026, with a panel featuring Robert Downey Jr. and 16 cast members 38. That stacking — Doomsday as the near-term event, then two 2028 titles built around a legacy mantle and a rebooted cult property — suggests Marvel wants both continuity and novelty to arrive on schedule, not as promises but as booked theaters.
What the footage doesn't prove
The announcements were separate from the Avengers: Doomsday segment, which included exclusive footage and surprise appearances 3. Our video narration also described a teaser and a surprise Deadpool appearance by Ryan Reynolds, but that detail cannot be confirmed from these sources 3. The Disney press release text provided in the research file mentions surprise appearances in the Doomsday panel but does not name Reynolds, and no other supplied source names him in that context 3. When sources disagree or go silent on a name, the honest answer is that the appearance is unproven, not that it did not happen.
That distinction matters because Comic-Con rewards hallucination: a glimpse of red-and-black in a sizzle reel becomes a cameo by morning on social media. What is established is that Doomsday had a large ensemble presence built around Downey and that Marvel used the panel to show exclusive footage 38. What is not established in this file is who else appeared, what the footage showed, or how Doomsday connects narratively to a grown prince in Wakanda or a stunt rider with a skull for a head 38. Marvel loves to imply those connections without stating them, and Hall H is designed to let fans do the connecting.
