Houthis Strike Saudi Military; Tanker Attack Reported

Thirty dead is the floor. Fifty-eight is the higher count now moving through reporting. Either way, Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026 was a day of mass casualties for Yemeni government troops aligned with Saudi Arabia, hit by large-scale Houthi drone and ballistic missile attacks in Marib and Hadramawt provinces. ^{3 10 11} The spread between at least 30 killed and up to 58 killed is not a rounding error. It reflects how fast claims traveled and how little independent access exists to the battlefields, but even the low end describes a coordinated strike that killed dozens of soldiers in a single day. ^{3 10 11}

What was hit matters as much as how many were killed. The targets were not Saudi garrisons inside Saudi Arabia, despite early confusion that framed the assault as an attack directly onto Saudi soil. They were Yemeni government and Saudi-led coalition sites inside Yemen, in Marib and Hadramawt, also spelled Hadramout in some reporting. ^{3 4} Those forces are backed by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and the fighting is now explicitly tied by regional reporting to the broader United States-Israel war on Iran. ^{9 3} In other words, Yemen is again functioning as a forward front in a wider confrontation, with Yemeni troops absorbing the first sustained blow. ^{9 3}

A day earlier, the war had already moved to sea. On Aug. 5, the Houthis claimed ballistic missile strikes on Saudi oil tankers named Wafa and Daisy by Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea, also transliterated Saree. ^{7 8 10} The Wafa is identified as NCC WAFA, a Saudi-flagged MR2 tanker, reported struck off Yanbu on Aug. 5. ^{7 8 10} Unlike early podcast-only chatter that left the tanker claim uncorroborated, without a vessel name, location or damage assessment, the Wafa claim was announced publicly by the Houthi spokesman on Aug. 5 and picked up by multiple independent outlets including AP reporting, FDD's Long War Journal, Windward and Particle. ^{7 8 10}

The Yanbu detail changes the map. Yanbu is far north up the Red Sea, well beyond the Bab el-Mandeb Strait between Yemen and the Horn of Africa that has been the Houthis' primary theater against commercial vessels. ⁷ The Houthi statement on the Wafa strike explicitly tied the attack to Saudi tankers rerouting north to avoid Bab el-Mandeb, a signal that evasion will be punished with longer-range targeting. ⁷ That claim sits inside a larger pattern: since declaring a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia on July 20, 2026, the Houthis have claimed attacks on eight Saudi-linked vessels. ⁸ Saudi Arabia is described as evaluating options in response. ⁸

The attack that did land on Saudi soil came separately, in the south. A Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia's Najran province injured 11 civilians, including a four-year-old child who suffered second-degree burns. ⁴ Najran borders Yemen and has been shelled and droned before during Yemen's long war, but the civilian toll here — 11 wounded in one incident — gives Riyadh a domestic injury count to answer alongside its battlefield losses through proxies in Marib and Hadramawt. ⁴ The distinction is important: Marib and Hadramawt were strikes on Yemeni soil against Saudi-aligned Yemeni forces, while Najran was a cross-border strike that wounded Saudi civilians. ^{3 4 10}

Thursday was not an isolated salvo. At least 12 fresh missile attacks hit Hadramout and Marib on Friday, following the drone and ballistic missile attacks on Saudi-led coalition and Yemeni government sites. ³ The tempo — mass-casualty ground strikes one day, a dozen more missile attacks the next, layered over claimed anti-shipping strikes — reads as a campaign rather than retaliation for a single incident. ^{3 8} It also mirrors how the Houthis have operated for more than a year in the Red Sea, using claimed and confirmed vessel hits to force rerouting, insurance repricing and naval redeployment without needing to sink ships. ^{7 8}

Riyadh is now bracing for worse. Saudi Arabia expects an imminent coordinated two-pronged attack from Iraqi militias and other Iran-aligned forces, according to an official account carried in regional reporting. ⁵ That warning, combined with the Aug. 5 and Aug. 6 strikes, suggests Saudi planners see the Houthi escalation not as Yemen-only fighting but as the opening move in synchronized pressure tied to the United States-Israel war on Iran. ^{3 5 9} Saudi Arabia and the UAE are backing Yemeni government forces to push back, a posture that points toward expanded conflict rather than containment. ⁹
