75,000 Fled the Lake. Help Stops at the Water.

What happens when the only way to dislodge an insurgency is to bomb the islands where civilians live, and the only way to help those civilians is to stay off those same islands? That is the trap Chad's Lac Province fell into after May 2026, and more than 75,000 newly displaced people are now living inside it. ^{1 2 3}

Most of the newly displaced fled the islands of Lake Chad for towns and villages inland, making this the largest displacement wave in the Lake Chad basin this year. ^{1 2} The figure is a UN estimate reported by the International Organization for Migration and carried by FRANCE 24 on 4 September 2026. ^{1 2 3} It is not a slow accumulation of movement but the product of two forces colliding: a Boko Haram escalation pushing deeper into Chadian territory, and a Chadian counter-offensive designed to clear the islands the attackers came from. ^{1 2 4}

President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno vowed to continue the fight with renewed determination until this threat is completely eradicated. ^{5 15} The official army line held at 23 soldiers killed and 26 wounded, while several AFP and local-official accounts the same day said at least 24 dead, and one army source cited 25 dead and 46 wounded. ^{5 11 15} The disagreement matters because it set the tone for everything after: a repelled raid in the official telling, a heavier blow in other tellings, and in both a justification for emergency rule and open war on the lake. ^{5 11}

What followed was an air-and-ground campaign against suspected camps of Boko Haram's Jama'atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad and of the Islamic State West Africa Province on the islands and marshlands, carried out by Chadian fighter jets with ground and watercraft forces and with support from neighbouring Nigeria. ^{4 7 9} Fleeing fighters and families moved toward the Tunbuns and into northern Borno State, with Doro Naira, Wula Wula, Njemina, Tunbun Gini, Tunbun Rago and Tunbun Shanu named as feared regrouping points. ⁹ The regional Multinational Joint Task Force is strained after Niger's earlier withdrawal from the force, and a regional Operation Lake Sanity III had been launched in April. ¹⁴

The campaign cleared ground that was never only militant ground. Chadian strikes that drove militants off the islands also killed Nigerian fishermen on islands under militant control, prompting United Nations calls for an investigation. ^{1 2} Displaced families from both sides of the border describe surprise night attacks, homes and food stores burned, families separated in flight, and kidnapping. ^{1 2} One woman described losing track of her son's wife, who was asleep and did not hear the fire before she was taken. ^{1 2} Others said they fled with nothing and could not go back for children left behind. ^{1 2}

The humanitarian response is real but fenced in. The International Organization for Migration is scaling up emergency food and supply aid and searching for newly displaced people who have not reached aid points. ^{1 2} But teams operate only where an area has been assessed as stable and accessible, and islands and zones at risk of infiltration or where armed presence is unknown are off-limits to routine aid. ^{1 2} That is exactly where the most exposed people came from, and precisely where the newly displaced are now hardest to find and serve. ^{1 2}

Money makes the gap wider. Humanitarian financing for the wider Lake Chad Basin stood at roughly a quarter of requirements by mid-2026. ¹⁸ Lac Province already hosted the bulk of Chad's internally displaced before this surge, on the order of 220,000 to 260,000 people, with earlier mapping counting about 22,025 Nigerian refugees around Baga Sola and Ngala. ^{10 13} No official tally of how many people have actually been moved off the islands has been published, and IOM has released neither a dedicated funding line nor a people-reached figure for this specific surge. ^{1 2}
